Description: This graphite drawing class places emphasis on drawing photorealistic images utilizing graded graphite pencils.
Working from reference material, usually photographs, the student will learn how to use graphite pencils and other tools to record the effects of light and shadow to create forms, highlights and cast shadows while blending them into images having realistic 3-D appearances. Class discussions will include how to break down images into basic shapes, strategies to transfer images, observing detail, pencil layering and developing contrast. Each student is treated individually and progresses at their own pace. The class is open to all levels–beginner to the more experienced.

Drawing to Painting

Description:

This class is open to students at all levels. For beginners, I often recommend starting with drawing. Although we will be working from a partially clothed live model, I can provide assistance and instruction to those students that have it in mind to work from their own original photographs.

An underlying theme throughout the journey of artistic development in this class is an exploration of techniques involving careful observation. Initially, I will introduce progressively challenging exercises based on direct observation and understanding of the forms of the model in light.

From basic fundamentals, such as the structure of the body, the use of the brush, and the first steps in the development of a keen aesthetic judgement, to portraiture that involves seeing through an eye that can perceive forms simplified, and finally to meaningful, thought provoking, and hopefully visually stunning multi-figure compositions.

Drawing pad 18 x 24
Graphite pencil set, or mechanical pencils, a Sharpener and Kneaded Eraser

For Oil Painting:
Canvas board 11 x 14 or larger
Paint Brushes
